What Is MSME Idea Hackathon 6.0?
MSME Idea Hackathon is an annual initiative by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India. Since its inception, it has become one of the country’s most celebrated platforms for promoting innovation among MSMEs, students, and individual innovators. The programme bridges the gap between raw ideas and real-world implementation by providing structured financial assistance, institutional incubation, technical mentorship, and prototype development support.
Each edition of the hackathon introduces a central pillar and theme cluster. MSME Idea Hackathon 6.0 revolves around one pillar — Frontier Technology in MSMEs — with six distinct thematic tracks under which innovators can submit their ideas. This focused approach ensures that selected ideas align with India’s national priorities in industrial modernisation, clean energy transition, and technological self-reliance.
The programme is open to all Indian citizens above 18 years of age (as on 27 June 2026) and provides a structured pathway from idea submission to prototype funding through Host Implementing Entities like IIMT University.
MSME Idea Hackathon 6.0: One Pillar, Six Themes
The central pillar of this edition is Frontier Technology in MSMEs. All six themes fall under this pillar, addressing the most critical domains driving industrial transformation in India and globally. Innovators must submit their ideas under one of the following six thematic areas:
Theme 01 — Renewable Energy
India is aggressively pursuing its renewable energy targets, and MSMEs have a massive role to play. Ideas under this theme can include solar-powered machinery, wind energy integration for small factories, bioenergy systems for rural MSMEs, green hydrogen applications, energy storage innovations, and decentralised power generation solutions. If your idea helps a small or medium enterprise reduce its dependence on fossil fuels or generate clean energy, this is your theme.
Theme 02 — Robotics and Automation
The next wave of manufacturing competitiveness will be driven by intelligent automation. This theme covers robotic arms for MSME production lines, automated quality inspection systems, warehouse robotics, cobots (collaborative robots) for small factories, AI-driven process automation, and sensor-based machinery upgrades. Ideas that make automation accessible and affordable for small businesses are especially encouraged.
Theme 03 — Industry 4.0 and 5.0
Industry 4.0 brought us smart factories, IoT-connected machines, and data-driven manufacturing. Industry 5.0 goes further — integrating human creativity with machine precision for sustainable, resilient, and human-centric production. Ideas under this theme can include IoT-based factory monitoring, digital twin technology, AI-based predictive maintenance, smart supply chain solutions, and collaborative human-robot production systems tailored for Indian MSMEs.
Theme 04 — Automotive Technology
India’s automotive sector is undergoing a transformation driven by electric vehicles, connected mobility, and lightweight materials. MSMEs supply a large share of auto components, and innovation here is critical. This theme welcomes ideas related to EV component manufacturing, battery management systems, advanced materials for auto parts, vehicle telematics for small fleets, and sustainable automotive manufacturing processes.
Theme 05 — Energy Efficiency
Energy costs are one of the biggest operational burdens for small businesses. Ideas under this theme should focus on helping MSMEs reduce energy consumption without reducing productivity. This includes energy-efficient motors and drives, smart energy management systems, waste heat recovery, building energy optimisation, green manufacturing processes, and energy audit tools designed for small enterprises.
Theme 06 — Other Frontier Technologies
Innovation does not always fit neatly into predefined categories. This open theme welcomes breakthrough ideas in areas such as advanced materials, nanotechnology, biotechnology for manufacturing, drone technology, augmented and virtual reality for industrial training, blockchain for supply chain transparency, quantum computing applications, and any other emerging technology with clear applicability to MSMEs.
Financial Assistance: Up to ₹15 Lakh Per Approved Idea
One of the most powerful features of MSME Idea Hackathon 6.0 is the financial support it provides to selected innovators. Financial assistance of up to ₹15 lakh per approved idea shall be provided to the Host Implementing Entity for developing and nurturing the idea.
This funding is channelled through the Host Implementing Entity — in this case, IIMT University — ensuring proper utilisation, accountability, and structured disbursement via the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). The funds are used to support prototype development, material procurement, technical testing, intellectual property filing, and other innovation-related activities.
This means that if your idea is selected, you do not need to arrange your own capital. The government funds the development process, and IIMT University provides the institutional infrastructure, lab access, faculty mentorship, and administrative support to bring your idea to life.
Who Can Apply for MSME Idea Hackathon 6.0?
The programme is inclusive and designed to welcome innovators from all walks of life. Any Indian citizen with a valid idea in frontier technology can apply. There are three categories of participation:
Category A — Students
Students enrolled in any recognised educational institution in India are eligible to apply under the Student category. A valid Student Identity Card for Financial Year 2026–27 must be submitted as proof of enrolment. IIMT University students across all programmes — engineering, management, science, pharmacy, law, and others — are strongly encouraged to apply. This is a rare opportunity to have your academic innovation recognised and funded at the national level while still in college.
Category B — MSME Entrepreneurs
Registered MSMEs can apply using their Udyam Registration Number. If you run a small or medium enterprise and have an idea to improve your operations, reduce costs, or develop a new product using frontier technology, this category is designed for you. If you do not yet have a Udyam Registration, you can register free of cost at udyamregistration.gov.in before submitting your hackathon application.
Category C — Others
Independent innovators, researchers, professionals, homemakers, retired experts, and any other Indian citizen above 18 years of age (as of 27 June 2026) can apply under the Others category. You simply need a valid email address and mobile number. You do not need to be affiliated with any institution or business to participate.
All applicants must be Indian citizens and must be above 18 years of age as on 27 June 2026.

Tips for a Strong Idea Submission
The quality of your idea submission plays a major role in whether you are shortlisted. Here are some practical tips to make your application stand out:
Clearly define the problem you are solving
Evaluators want to see that you understand a real problem faced by MSMEs or industry. Start your idea description with a crisp statement of the problem — who faces it, how often, and what the current solutions lack.
Be specific about your technology
Vague ideas score poorly. If your idea involves IoT sensors, specify the type of sensors, the data they collect, and how that data drives a decision. If it involves robotics, describe the mechanical system and control logic. Specificity signals that you have thought through the idea seriously.
Show feasibility within the funding limit
The maximum funding is ₹15 lakh. Your idea should be achievable — at least at prototype stage — within this budget. If your idea requires significantly more, consider scoping it to a proof-of-concept that can attract further investment after the hackathon.
Highlight the MSME relevance
The hackathon is focused on frontier technology in MSMEs. Even if you are applying as a student or individual, your idea must have a clear application to small and medium enterprises. Explain how your solution helps an MSME reduce costs, improve quality, increase productivity, or access new markets.
Mention scalability
Ideas that can be scaled beyond a single enterprise to benefit entire industries or sectors score higher. Show that your solution is not just a one-off improvement but a replicable model with broader impact potential.
Seek guidance from IIMT-BIF before submission
Our incubation team has experience reviewing and refining hackathon submissions. Before you hit submit, speak to us. A 20-minute conversation with an IIMT-BIF mentor can significantly improve the quality and clarity of your submission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a team apply, or only individuals?
The hackathon portal allows both individual and team applications. Teams should ensure that one member registers as the primary applicant and selects IIMT University as the Host Implementing Entity. All team members’ details can be added during the submission process.
Can a student from outside IIMT University apply through IIMT?
Yes. While IIMT University students are naturally encouraged to apply through us, students from other colleges and institutions in Uttar Pradesh and beyond can also choose IIMT University as their Host Implementing Entity. The support we provide is open to all innovators who register through our institution.
Do I need to have a fully developed idea or prototype already?
No. The hackathon is called an idea hackathon for a reason. You are submitting a concept, not a finished product. The evaluation is based on the quality, originality, and feasibility of your idea. The prototype is developed after selection, with the support of IIMT University and the government funding.
What happens after my idea is selected?
Selected innovators are onboarded into the IIMT-BIF incubation programme. The ₹15 lakh grant is released in tranches through PFMS to IIMT University, which then supports prototype development, IP filing, testing, and other activities. You work closely with IIMT faculty and industry mentors throughout the development process.
Is there any fee to apply?
No. The application is completely free of charge for all categories of participants.
What if I do not have a Udyam Registration for the MSME category?
You can register your MSME on the Udyam portal at udyamregistration.gov.in free of cost. The process is quick and paperless. Once registered, you will receive your Udyam Registration Number, which you can use for the hackathon application.
Can I apply under multiple themes?
Each applicant or team should submit one idea under one theme. If you have ideas across multiple themes, you may submit separate applications, but each submission must be a distinct innovation and not a variation of the same idea.
